Harper College is a comprehensive community college in Palatine, Illinois. The college was established by referendum in 1965, while it actually opened in September 1967.
Harper College offers more than 40 career programs which grant an associate degree or certificate and provide necessary skills for people planning to enter the work force. These programs can vary in length from sixteen weeks to two years. The College also provides some certificate programs so it can meet the specific education and vocational needs of the community.
The college also offers more than 50 transfer options, allowing students to earn their associate degree before transferring to a four-year college or university to complete their bachelor's degree. Harper offers classes, certificates and degrees in many fields, from Architecture and Construction, Arts, Business and Health Sciences, to Manufacturing, Information Technology, Law Enforcement and Natural Science.
The Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of College and Secondary Schools fully accredits all courses, educational programs, counseling services and distance learning programs at Harper College. The college is also currently seeking to offer two bachelor degree programs on a pilot basis. Harper College still won't be turned into a 4- year university by providing two vocational bachelor degree courses on a pilot basis.
Harper College also offers distance learning options, whether the students are looking for just one course, or a full program of study. However, at least basic computer skills are needed so one could be a successful online learner.
To serve students who welcome an academic challenge, Harper College has its own Honors Program. The Harper College Honors Program offers about nine or ten Honors courses each semester. Every Honors course has an enrollment capacity of 15 students, which forms a more likeable teacher-to-student ratio. Most of Harper's Honors courses have levels of student participation which are above the average, which shows the dedication of the honor students.
The Honors Program also offers many service-related opportunities through its Honors Society. The Honors Society is the social branch of the Honors Program. According to that, the Honors Program at Harper is divided into two different halves: the academic half and the social/service half.
Harper College has a 200-acre campus, which is located approximately 25 miles northwest of downtown Chicago, Illinois in the suburb of Palatine. The campus was designed to have an informal layout. Its structures are built into the natural contours of the land, with entrances on located on several levels.
